IRL Backpack build

LiveU Solo vs a DIY belaBOX backpack: which should you build?

The two real IRL paths compared: a $995 plug-and-play LiveU Solo, or a $150 DIY belaBOX rig you build yourself.

Holds 1080p60 on Twitch (standard)

Your encoder tops out at 1080p60. A higher-end encoder would go further.

These are the two paths most IRL streamers actually choose. The LiveU Solo is a polished hardware encoder with bonding built in. belaBOX is the open-source DIY alternative that does the same job for a fraction of the cost, if you are willing to build it.

LiveU Solo
Pros
  • Plug-and-play, bonding (LRT) built in
  • Rock-solid and well supported
  • No assembly, just power it on
Cons
  • Around $995 plus an LRT data plan
  • Closed ecosystem and recurring fees
  • You are locked into their service
DIY belaBOX
Pros
  • Around $150 in parts, free firmware
  • Full control and SRTLA bonding
  • Cheap relay options, no vendor lock-in
Cons
  • You assemble it and flash the microSD
  • More setup and troubleshooting
  • No official support line

Who should buy which

If your time is worth more than the money and you want it to just work, buy the LiveU Solo. If you are technical, on a budget, or you enjoy the build, belaBOX gives you the same stable stream for the cost of a few takeout orders.

LiveU Solo

The turnkey pick. Bonds cellular out of the box, plug in a camera and go.

Orange Pi 5 + belaBOX

The DIY pick. Same practical result, around $150, with open firmware.

Either way, you still need two things: more than one connection to bond, and a relay so a dropped signal is a BRB screen, not a restarted stream.
